AMBASSADOR’S FUND FOR REFUGEES: COSTA RICA

The Embassy partnered with local NGO “ACAI” to create three childcare centers that are operated by refugees for refugees.

Each center can enroll up to ten children, and at least 50% of the enrollees are refugees.

Each of the childcare providers received training from the Costa Rican government.

The centers are located in urban areas near or in the capital city where there are high concentrations of refugees.

The first center was inaugurated on May 16, 2006.

Money from the Ambassador’s Fund was used to prepare each of the centers (operated out of the childcare providers’ homes), which included refurbishments and materials.

The Fund money will also provide five-month scholarships to pay the fees for the refugee enrollees while their parents are seek work.

Two more childcare centers are going to be opened soon!

Thank you PRM for allowing us to make the dream of affordable childcare a reality for refugees in Costa Rica!

Following are photos from the grand opening ceremony.
