  Projects Concluded by the Hub

In Central America: 

  • Completion of the two remaining "Strengthening Parliamentary and Judicial Environmental Decision-making and Good Governance in Central America" capacity building workshops that the Center for Environmental Law and Natural Resources (CEDARENA) and the Organization for Tropical Studies (OTS) conducted in all of Central America in order to strengthen legislation design and implementation, for legislators and representatives from the judicial branch in each country; 
  • Pursuing the development of an International Sea Grant Network at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) to address marine and coastal resource issues in six Central and South American countries including Honduras, Nicaragua, Panama, Brazil, Colombia, and Ecuador; 
  • Conduct training on Trade and Identification of Big-Leaf Mahogany in Central America for custom officers and assist CITES authorities in the region to harmonize procedures for reducing illegal logging and trafficking of mahogany; and 
  • Conduct Marine Fisheries Enforcement Workshop in the Gulf of Honduras, to help governments of Honduras, Guatemala, and Belize advance in their enforcement capacity required to implement fisheries restrictions in the Gulf of Honduras.

In the Caribbean: 

  • Foster and Strengthen Wider Caribbean Basin marine and coastal management partnerships announced at the White Water to Blue Water (WW2BW) Conference held in Miami in March 2004. (Communicative Success [pdf file] , Mobilizing Resources [pdf file])
  • Promote implementation of the Environmental Cooperation Agreement of the Dominican Republic-Central America-United States Free Trade Agreement and the Program of Work among Costa Rica, Nicaragua, Honduras, Guatemala, El Salvador and Dominican Republic;
  • Implementation of the Convention for the Protection and Development of the Wider Caribbean Region (Cartagena Convention); 
  • Implementation of the International Coral Reef Initiative. 

Concluded Regional Activities: 

  • Supported the organization for the Meeting of the Interim Steering Committee of the Western Hemisphere Migratory Birds Conference, held in Costa Rica in August 2004.
