RECENT UPDATES
DHL Passport Delivery Service
Starting October 1, 2007 the U.S. Embassy and DHL will offer delivery service of your newly issued passport. We will offer two types of service.
One-way Service
One-way service is available for applicants whose passports have expired at the time you apply for a new passport. To deliver your new passport, the DHL service will cost ¢2,450 colones
.
Two-way Service
Two-way service is available for applicants whose current passport is still valid at the time you apply for a new passport. When your new passport arrives, the Embassy will call you. You need to return the valid passport to the Embassy via DHL to have it cancelled. The Embassy will then mail to you via DHL your cancelled passport along with your new passport. This service will cost ¢4,850 colones.
Payment and shipping forms:
- Passports are not delivered directly to your home, but rather to the DHL service center closest to your home.
- Regardless of whether you choose one-way or two-way service, you will pay and fill out the shipping forms at the DHL counter at the Embassy when you apply for your new passport.
- The applicant will provide DHL with a photo to be attached to the airway bill for purposes of identification in cases of two-way service where the applicant may not have any other means of identification.
- DHL will provide you with a receipt and an airway bill, as well as with an information sheet in English regarding their services or conditions.
- Once you receive the receipt and airway bill, walk back into the Embassy and give a copy of the airway bill to the counter attendant.
- In the case of two-way service, you will receive a call or email from the Consular Section that your new passport has arrived at the Embassy. When you receive this call, you should go to the nearest DHL Service center with your prepaid shipping form and send your current passport to the DHL office at the Consular Section.
- We must have your old passport to cancel it. We will send your cancelled passport back to you with your newly issued passport. We will not be able to send your new passport prior to canceling the old one.
- Only the applicant may pick up the passport at the DHL Service Center unless the applicant is a minor, in which case the parent may pick up the passport with appropriate identification.
Note: If you do not wish to use the DHL Service, you may return to the U.S. Embassy to pick up your passport 10-12 days after you submit your application.
